This is what you will need:

  1. Pumpkins
  2. Candles or battery operated lamps
  3. Plenty of old newspapers
  4. Plenty of paper towels
  5. Small kitchen knifes such as paring knives

This is how you go about carving a pumpkin:

  1. Place several layers of newspaper over your work surface
  2. Wash the pumpkin if it is dirty and mop dry with paper towels and place it on the working surface (See A)
  3. Mark a circle around the stem of the pumpkin with a felt pen (See B). Make sure that the resulting hole that you are about to cut is large enough for you to put your entire hand inside the pumpkin to scrape out the contents
  4. Cut the top of the pumpkin off by cutting along the marked line using a small kitchen knife such as a paring knife (See C)
  5. With a large spoon, or knife, remove the strings from the top that you had cut off the pumpkin
  6. With a spoon scrape out the content of the pumpkin
  7. Pick which side of the pumpkin you want to carve. If you are using a stencil for the face, tape the stencil to the pumpkin and mark where cuts should go with a small knife or felt pen. Otherwise, draw a face on the pumpkin with a felt pen. Cut out the face with a paring knife (See D)
  8. If you are using a candle, cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin to make it easier to put in and light the candle. Instead of using a candle in the pumpkin, there are many small battery operated lamps that you can try. They are much safer than candles.
